Custom vs. Stock Cabinets: When Each Makes Sense
Cabinet selection is one of the biggest line items in a kitchen budget. Choosing between custom and stock isn't a quality question — both can be great — it's a question of fit.
Stock cabinets
Pre-manufactured in fixed widths (9" increments), pre-finished, and warehoused for fast pickup. Best when:
- You have a standard rectangular kitchen footprint
- You're flipping a property and need 2–3 week turnaround
- The budget caps cabinets at ~$5,000–$10,000
Custom cabinets
Built to your exact dimensions, materials, hardware, and finish. Best when:
- Walls are out of square, ceilings aren't uniform, or the kitchen has unusual angles
- You want specific storage (spice pull-outs, panel-ready fridge integration, deep drawer banks)
- You want a finish or style not offered in stock lines
- Resale value matters and the kitchen needs to read "high-end"
The hybrid option
Many Houston kitchens combine the two: stock perimeter cabinets, custom island. You get a tight budget where standard sizing works, plus a statement piece in the center of the room.
