SPC vs. Laminate Flooring: A Houston Buyer's Guide
If you're choosing flooring for a Houston home or jobsite, you've almost certainly compared SPC (stone polymer composite) luxury vinyl to laminate. Both look great, both install fast — but they perform very differently in our humid Gulf Coast climate.
What is SPC?
SPC is a rigid-core flooring built from a limestone-and-polymer composite. The result is a board that's 100% waterproof, dimensionally stable, and stiff enough to bridge minor subfloor imperfections.
What is laminate?
Laminate is a high-density fiberboard core wrapped in a printed decorative film. Its strength is sharpness of image and budget pricing. Its weakness: moisture. The HDF core swells when wet — even an unnoticed dishwasher leak can ruin a laminate floor.
Side-by-side comparison
- Waterproof: SPC yes, laminate no
- Best rooms: SPC anywhere (kitchens, baths, basements); laminate in bedrooms/living rooms
- Subfloor tolerance: SPC high (rigid core bridges); laminate low (needs flat subfloor)
- Houston humidity: SPC unaffected; laminate can swell at edges
- Underfoot feel: SPC slightly softer; laminate slightly harder
- Cost per sq ft: SPC $3–$6; laminate $1.50–$3.50
The verdict for Houston
For most Houston projects we recommend SPC. The premium over laminate is small compared to the cost of replacing a swollen floor after the first hurricane-season leak. Reserve laminate for low-moisture, low-budget rooms where waterproofing isn't a concern.
